Pymble Ladies College acknowledges Indigenous peoples

General News

Pymble Ladies’ College combined its celebration of Reconciliation Week and National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC) by painting a large Aboriginal flag on the College’s Gloucester Lawn. The Torres Strait flag was also drawn and coloured in chalk on the flagstones in front of the College War Memorial Chapel, adjacent to the Gloucester Lawn.

Reconciliation week, held in the week beginning 27 May, marks the anniversary of the 1967 Referendum, recognising Indigenous Australians as citizens in their own land.  Monday 3 June marked the anniversary of the Mabo decision, recognising native title and over turning ‘terra nullius’ (land that belongs to no-one). NAIDOC is a celebration of Indigenous culture and the contribution of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to the arts and culture in modern Australian society.

Students across the College participated in the celebration with the Preparatory and Junior School students decorating hand prints with interesting designs. Secondary School students wrote messages of encouragement, support, hope and congratulations to Indigenous Australians on their own hand prints which were cut out, mounted on sticks and planted in a sea of hands within the Aboriginal flag on the Gloucester Lawn.

During assemblies and Chapel services held through the week there were talks and performances highlighting Indigenous culture including a performance by the College’s Year 11 Indigenous scholars who sang Ngarra Burra Ferrafrom the film The Sapphires.

“The College is committed to achieving the highest ideals in the education and development of girls and young women and embraces the opportunity to offer indigenous girls an outstanding educational experience in their secondary school years alongside their non-Indigenous peers,” said College Principal, Mrs Vicki Waters. “The 13 indigenous scholars currently enrolled at Pymble have enriched the College community and enabled our students to develop a better understanding and appreciation of indigenous history, literature and culture

The Pymble Ladies’ College Indigenous Scholarship Program was established in 2007 to provide Leadership and Performance Scholarships for Indigenous girls from remote and regional Australia to attend Pymble. Since commencing, 17 Indigenous Scholars have attended the College through the Scholarship Program
